What Is the US Citizenship Test?

The US Citizenship Test is a required part of the naturalization process for lawful permanent residents who wish to become United States citizens. During the interview, applicants must demonstrate basic knowledge of United States history, government, and civics while also meeting English language requirements unless they qualify for a specific exemption.

The civics portion of the naturalization interview is administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Applicants are asked questions selected from the official USCIS civics question bank. Preparing with realistic practice tests is one of the most effective ways to improve confidence and increase the likelihood of passing the interview on the first attempt.

CivicsTestUSA provides free practice exams, bilingual study materials, and citizenship interview preparation resources designed specifically for immigrants and their families.

How Many Questions Are on the USCIS Civics Test?

USCIS introduced an updated civics question bank containing 128 official questions. During the naturalization interview, officers select questions from this pool to evaluate an applicant's understanding of American history, government structure, constitutional principles, and civic responsibilities.

While applicants are not asked all 128 questions during the interview, studying the complete question bank is highly recommended. This approach helps eliminate weak areas and ensures that candidates are prepared regardless of which questions are selected by the interviewing officer.

Our platform offers both a complete review mode covering all 128 USCIS civics questions and realistic 20-question mock exams that simulate actual test conditions.

Who Qualifies for the 65/20 Exemption?

Certain older applicants may qualify for special accommodations during the citizenship process. Under USCIS rules, lawful permanent residents who are at least 65 years old and have held a Green Card for at least 20 years may qualify for the 65/20 exemption.

Applicants who qualify for this exemption are not required to take the English reading and writing portions of the test. They may use an interpreter during the interview and only need to study a simplified list of 20 designated civics questions rather than the complete question bank.

Additional language exemptions may also apply under the 50/20 and 55/15 rules. Our free English Exemption Calculator can help determine whether an applicant qualifies for one of these special provisions.

How to Pass the Naturalization Interview?

Successful applicants typically prepare for three key parts of the naturalization process: the civics test, the English test, and the eligibility review conducted during the interview. Consistent practice is more effective than memorizing answers shortly before the appointment.

Begin by studying the official USCIS civics questions and reviewing explanations for topics that are unfamiliar. Next, take regular mock exams to identify areas that need additional review. Finally, familiarize yourself with common interview questions related to your N-400 application and immigration history.

Thousands of applicants use online citizenship practice tests because they provide immediate feedback, realistic exam simulations, and flexible study schedules. With consistent preparation and a clear understanding of the official USCIS requirements, most applicants can approach their interview with confidence.
